    The Ugly Truth About Ipswich

Compiled here for the first time, many of the greatest performances of Ipswich music recorded between 1981 and 2011. Meticulously researched and assembled from thirty years of field recordings in the remote county town of Suffolk, in the East Anglian region of England.

Before the invention of the phonograph and gramophone, the musical heritage of Ipswich is largely undocumented. With the advent of the electrical microphone and modern recording techniques, folklorists and ethnomusicologists travelling the region were able to preserve the indigenous music of Suffolk for the first time.

The music they discovered had evolved in the cultural and geographical isolation of the rural Suffolk heartland. Genres long-extinct in mainstream Britain had been preserved in the absence of media pressure to reinvent Eighties synth-pop every five years. Collectors uncovered many surviving examples of punk rock, which had flourished and diversified in the town and its surrounding villages, noting stylistic divergence into new and exotic subgenres, including hardcore, skatepunk and grindcore.

We are proud to present probably the only compilation album featuring both Nik Kershaw and Extreme Noise Terror.

This is a glass-mastered double CD set with a 16-page booklet. Released in collaboration with Corndog Records. Due to licensing restrictions, this will not be repressed or made available on streaming services.

about

Compiled for the first time, many of the greatest performances of Ipswich music ever recorded. Meticulously researched and assembled from thirty years of field recordings in the remote county town of Suffolk, in the East Anglian region of England.

This is a glass-mastered double CD set in a jewel case, with a 16-page booklet, released in collaboration with Corndog Records.

“Fuck me. This is one crazy compilation. Not only does it cost less than half a pint of ale for 40-plus tracks over the course of two CDs, the opener is by former 80's synth midget Nik Kershaw who now dabbles in anthemic MOR indie rock which is actually not half as excruciating as I was expecting! I'm not gonna attempt to actually review this Ipswich tourism board promotional tool other than to say I wish more towns and cities would take such pride in their diverse musical history and take their cues from this remarkable gesture! To shoehorn legendary grind/thrash bands such as Extreme Noise Terror and The Stupids onto a disc with such comically monikered acts like Cats Against the Bomb (song title: Nerys Hughes Vs The Time Tunnel) and Space Maggots is a brave, irreverent move and although there is inevitably going to be some testing of patience and tastes throughout, this is surely an entertaining and intelligent way of giving little-known acts some exposure. I've tragically not got time to check out WhiteSlug's 'Corned Beef Sex Monster' as a stack of urgent boxes have just arrived but I really think you should.” - Norman Records
