about

Dingus Khan songs rarely benefit from over-analysis. And this one is no exception. For those of you blissfully unaware, Ivan Ooze was an evil alien despot, who faced off against the Power Rangers in 1995’s Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie. In the film, he was trapped in a hyperlock chamber for 6000 years, before being freed to terrorise Earth with his purple gelatinous discharge.

Ooze may seem an unlikely muse for Dingus Khan lyricist and frontman Mick Squalor, until you discover that both are able to secrete hypnotic mucus that brainwashes people into doing their bidding. How else can anyone explain the cult-like following enjoyed by the Manningtree-based band for the last ten years? And both have dressed as carnival wizards in order to pass on their slime to children without attracting the attention of the authorities.

But if this song is about anything, it’s certainly not about a fictional intergalactic tyrant from a Power Rangers movie – it’s about a fictional band named after a fictional intergalactic tyrant from a Power Rangers movie. It’s a song that manages to name-check Nickleback and slander Engelbert Humpadinck. And Dingus Khan have even produced a (Subterranean Homesick Blues-inspired) lyric video, in case solicitors acting on behalf of Humpadinck need evidence to support legal action against them.

Much like its titular namesake, Ivan Ooze (the song) has been sealed away for years to protect the people of Earth. Originally recorded as part of the ‘Free the Quay’ album sessions in 2014, it was released briefly as a bonus track on the super-limited edition Dunce Kap CD in 2017. The remastered single edit will be available digitally for the first time on Valentine’s Day – 14 February 2020.

Ivan Ooze was recorded and mixed by George Perks (The Darkness, Jeff Wayne’s 2019 version of War of the Worlds) at Punch Studios in Ipswich. Mastered by Eric James at Philosophers Barn.
