about

Awaulukuma (Dog) is a spirit, an apapaatai, that is not visible to the common eye. It can only be seen by pajé’s eyes. When someone gets ill, the pajé does his pajelança (healing prayer) to find the spirit who is
causing harm. When he identifies the apapaatai, the ill person’s family goes to the centre of the village to choose someone that will represent that spirit and offers him mingau. The impersonator then becomes the
apapaatai and visits the ill person to thank him/her for the gift. When the ill person is feeling better, the family organizes a ritual to the spirit, with singing and dancing. Because singers know apapaatai songs, they are usually the ones chosen to represent the spirits.

Awaulukuma is one of those apapaatai that can cause illness. The Awaulukuma ritual begins with the impersonating of the spirit of the Dog and the offering of mingau. Then the singer gets ready to perform the collective ritual, when he performs the Awaulukuma songs in the centre with all the community. The ill person is the owner of the ritual, and thus responsible for providing food to Awaulukuma. By the end of the ritual everyone, including the singer, has to pay their share to the owner of the ritual.
