Eight ageless post-punk classics spat from a pre-millennial time warp. Ipswich’s favourite teen punk delinquents regroup and discover there’s still plenty to be angry about in their late thirties.

Teenage tearaways Violent Playground exploded on to the Ipswich punk scene at the dog-end of the 1990s, as an excuse for Kate Reed and Louise Brett to skip school and squander their future for the bright lights of Blank Generation punk nights at the Steamboat Tavern. Joined by Sam Hornsey on bass and Dan Miner on drums, they were snapped up by Backwater Records for their debut EP in 2001. The Great Die Young was a beautiful lo-fi shambles that betrayed musical ambitions way beyond their ability to play their instruments.

Dominic Cattermole replaced Dan to complete the band’s most notorious incarnation and they set about terrorizing the elder statesmen of punk (inc. UK Subs, 999 and Red Flag ’77) with anarchic live shows across the country. With the release of a second, self-titled EP on antigen records in 2002, the band cemented their local reputation with a confident progression into post-punk, before splitting suddenly without explanation in 2003.

Violent Playground regrouped in 2018 for a one-off reunion gig and enjoyed themselves so much they decided to release a new record (of old material). We had originally planned to compile the two EPs for a joint-reissue with Backwater Records, but the band decided instead to record their reunion show set, live at Universal rehearsal studios with Gareth Patch (These Are End Times).

Violent Years contains five songs from Universal session, two tracks from their self-titled EP and a psyche-punk blinder from the Backwater era, remixed by label tsar Steve Mann for the original planned compilation.

Massive thanks to Gareth and to Steve for his work on the remix project. Hopefully more tracks will emerge from this in due course.

Tracks 3 and 8 previously released on the Violent Playground EP in 2002. The original mix of track 4 was previously released on the CDR re-issue of The Great Die Young EP, released on Backwater Records in 2004. We would like to thank Steve Mann for remixing tracks 4 and 9 and allowing their use for this release.
