Plundering pre-internet tape archives for relics of the post-punk era has become a depressingly familiar feature of a moribund music industry obsessed with monetising nostalgia. Labels manufacture triple-vinyl box-sets for male menopausal mid-life crises. A barrel-scraping exercise in which it seems nothing is too valueless or peripheral to be spared the reissue treatment.

Arguably, nothing illustrates that better than this latest collection of work by the pioneer of property portfolio punk, Bruce MacGregor, and his various enablers. It’s the compilation that no one has been waiting for, celebrating the 38-year career of a man whose impact on popular culture cannot be underestimated.

It collects highlights from his first two demos with The Suckers in 1984, a song from his sole outing with The Blowers in 1985, and tracks from the Tender Lugers EPs that caused Domino founder Laurence Bell to abandon his first attempt at running a record label in the late 80s. The compilation concludes with four tracks covering the 30-year career of the seminal Earth Mother Fucker, recorded between 1990 and 2020.
