about

Split 7″ released to coincide with the two bands’ Free Folk in Brexit Britain tour, which started on 10 July 2018.

Sutari and Dead Rat Orchestra bonded over a shared interest in the musical possibilities of meat cleavers, after meeting at Fanø folk festival in Denmark. The Polish trio perform Kuchenny (Kitchen Story) – a traditional song from the Kuyavia region of Poland. In an impressive feat of multi-tasking, the song was performed while Zosia was mixing a cake, Kasia was cutting a carrot and Basia was grating a celeriac. According to the track credits, sound engineer Pacman’s contribution was making scrambled eggs. On the first night of the tour, they explained that this is a song about revenge. When a boy stops speaking to a girl, she puts a curse on him “for his horse to break all of his legs.” Kuchenny is taken from Sutari’s debut album Wiano (Bride Price), originally released in 2014.

Pearmains & Pippins is a rendering of a song published anonymously by J.F. in the Birmingham Gazette on 1 August 1791, pithily entitled, Song, on obtaining the Birmingham and Worcester Canal Bill. The band discovered the lyric in Anthony Burton’s book The Canal Builders, but the melody was long lost. Performed extensively on The Cut (the group’s 273-mile canal boat tour of 2014), this version was developed by singing extended harmonies over the engine rattle of their ill-fated boat, the Gemini II.
