Back in the 1980s, sad young men would compile playlists of music on to spools of magnetic tape, held in plastic 'cassettes'. We would laboriously record songs from vinyl discs and radio transmissions and then foist these cassettes on to our equally sad male friends, hoping to impress them with our eclectic taste. If we were brave enough, we might even give them to girls, with cunningly hidden messages of unrequited love buried in song lyrics by Robert Smith or Morrissey (preferably from before he became a racist).
